Crooked Cops, Panama City

Dec 2, 2013 David to Panama City, Panama 450km.
About a hundred kms down we blew through a 40 zone going about 80km\h.   There was a cop car and a few cops sitting there but they didnt pay us much notice.  What we didn't know is that they called ahead to a cop on a motorcycle.  We came down the hill and the cop was obviously expecting us as he was already standing in the middle of the road waving us down. The cop informed us that we were speeding and would get a $75 USD ticket each, we tried to explain that we weren't speeding etc..... He then called the Captain from the previous town.  He came with his radar gun and said we were doing 80 in a 40 zone.  Trevor and I had been stopped for awhile and were eager to get going.  Soon after the captain left and the cop all of a sudden said that $20 each and the problem would go away.  We paid the bribe and hit the road.
We snuck a photo of the cop.

It got warm....
We met Marc and Nadia on the road, also from Alberta/Mexico.
As we approached Panama City the number of cops increased.  Sometimes we could still see the cop behind us when there was another ahead stopped on the side of the road.

We caught a intense rain storm just as we were pulling in.  We crossed the bridge of the Americas and entered Panama City.  Panama City has an amazing skyline.   Its quite something to see highrises after 2 months of seeing nothing higher than a 2 story.
Countless Highrises....

We found ourselves lost again....

Then this fellow Canadian ran up after recognizing the Alberta plates.  He was taking a tour of the city with his cab driver and attempted to help us find out hotel.
Unfortunately he had to get going, we stopped and found some internet and then were able to drive the 8 blocks or so to the hostel. (Mamallena)  We met Dan there and later on the Marc and Nadia.

Panama Locks, Exploring the City
No big boats traveling through while we were there, still very cool.

American relics left behind.

Bike Maintenance, Chilling
We were unable to get our wheels checked.  The Suzuki dealerships that we found did not have the proper equipment.  We will get our wheels checked in Columbia.  We spent some time cleaning the chains and re oiling them. We also changed the oil.

We met some new friends and enjoyed playing Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride.   Good times.

Tomorrow we head out with the gang to board the boat to Columbia.

  1. Finally got around to the blog. Really enjoyed it. I will be following from now on. See that you are meeting and are helped by lots of locals (and canadians but that's a given).Gives faith in humanity. The world still likes Canadians. Don't become too much like the US. Safe travels and lots of adventure and people. Greg from Reef House
