Chasing the Dakar to Chile

January 12, 2014 Desert outside of Uyuni, Bolivia to the desert outside of Calama, Chile. 380km.

Last night we drove the first 100km to the only gas station.   Today we have a section about 380km without gas.   The most we have ever driven is 300km so we filled up an old oil jug and a few pop bottles (5L each) and headed off hoping..

The road was gravel for most of the day, sometime hard packed and smooth, sometimes sandy and dusty and othertimes riddled with potholes.

About 100km in we added the extra gas to our tanks.

Before we knew it we were stamped out of Bolivia.  They were gearing up for all the quads and motorcycles to pass through tomorrow.   We randomly caught up to our jeep club friends from Brazil at the border!  Small world.

The roads in Chile... well for a couple of random miles then back to gravel.  It was very strange.

We met some Brazilians on bikes at the border.  We caught up to them a bit later on in the day.

Desolation

We spent a couple hours wandering around town trying to find wifi and to get Kyle's banking sorted out.  It was incredibly hard on a Sunday afternoon.  We ended up paying a lady at a hotel for a couple minutes of internet use.
We headed out to the desert to camp after stopping at a grocery story.  Beer and Doritos for supper!  Our first camp spot was too windy so we moved behind a hill.  Trevor had already unpacked his bike....  His shoes fell out in the sand dunes somewhere so Trevor went for a little walk following his bike trail and found one and Kyle stumbled upon the other.
Windy camping.  We used our bikes as windbreaks.
