The Inca Trail and the backroad to Machu Picchu

January 5, 2014 Cusco to Agua Calientes.  220km.

We finally met up with Dave Ranson from St. Albert.   The three of us made plans to ride to Machu Picchu over the next two days.
This morning we headed out at 6am.   We plan on taking the back road to MP to avoid the very expensive and boring train ride.
We rode through the sacred valley, passing through the small towns of Urubamba and Ollantaytambo.

Soon we were climbing another high mountain pass.   At the rate we were going we were expecting snow in MP!  (little did we know we were going to be going right back down the mountain) It peaked at 4,300 meters.

While riding this pass we came across a truck that had plunged off the road in the night.  The police were on scene but things didnt look good.

The back road to MP was really easy.  The road in nice pavement (<3 years old) all the way to Santa Maria.  On the way down the mountain there are some water crossings.  Typical concrete water crossings.   This road would be a motorcyclists dream road, however, it was extremely cold, wet and foggy for us.  We had to be careful.   We arrived in Santa Maria at around 10am.
From Santa Maria we continued on a narrow gravel road to Santa Teresa, were we will store the bikes.

Trevor doing an unnecessary water crossing..
Was a little deep and got completely soaked!

In Cartegena Columbia we finally got our Canadian flags sewn on!
There were several water crossings.  We had a lot of fun on this road.  Nice solid gravel.
We parked our bikes in the lobby of the IncaMama Hostel.  Its the first one as you enter town.  There were two other bikes there from Alberta, what are the chances!  It cost us 5 soles each to park them there for a night.

We took a taxi to Hydroelectrica where we followed the train tracks into Aguas Calientes.

Peru is investing heavily into hydro electric power.  The river is very strong in this area and they have manipulated it but drilling giant holes through the mountians making it even stronger.

The hikes took about 3 or so hours. Found a hostel and then splurged on expensive pizza and beer. Crazy markups in this town for everything!
