The road that never ends....

January 3, 2014  Huancayo to Somewhere in the mountains.... Peru.  600+km

There were a lot of confusing roads and directions today.  We are really not sure which roads we ended up on.

We have been struggling with powering the GPS while driving.  Our fix yesterday didnt really work as it immediately died while leaving town (Huancayo) this morning. Back to the good old way of asking directions with our somewhat improved spanish!
Before we knew it we were headed down a gravel road with many miles to make....

After about 40km the gravel road met up with the main road to Ayachucho which was another death road in itself. One lane with mountain on one side and cliff on the other. Little scary coming around corners and all of a sudden you hear a semi honking their horn. Time to nail the brakes and rapidly search for a tiny spot to stop as they fly by generally without slowing down..

Finally a day with dry pavement!

Some amazing scenery and crazy cliffs.  There were a bunch of landslides being cleared away by front end loaders and dump trucks.

We arrived in Ayachucho around 1pm.  We grabbed a quick lunch and continued on.  We ended up getting a motorcycle police escort out of town which saved us tons of time!

The police said it was about 4 hours to Abancay.  We soon saw a sign that said 233km to Abancay.  Perfect.
We crossed some very remote Altiplano and then descended the other side.

It was dark, cold and foggy.... we really needed to stop for the night.  The road kept climbing... 240km... 250km.  Then we see a sign, "Abancay 90 km" and the road just randomly turned into a shitty wet gravel sand road.  That was it, we climbed the hillside and set up camp.   While we were setting up camp a pickup comes down the hill!  We asked it it was ok to stay here.  It was, but he informed us it would be cold.  We told him we were from Canada were it it moy freio. They had a good laugh and were on their way.
