Dakar in Calama, Jeep Love!

January 13, 2014  Calama to 60km outside of Calama, Chile

Today we spent the day watching the Dakar (cars and trucks).  The vehicles blasted down from the hills to the valley (airport) where the finish line was.

First thing in the morning we ran into the jeep guys again just outside of airport!  We chatted for a little while, they had some fun last night and were a little late starting.  They hadn't missed anything yet. They were heading up into the hills to watch the race and have a BBQ.

We headed out.  After getting separated for a little bit, Trevor decided to drive on top of this solid looking mound to look for Kyle and turned out to be extremely soft almost going over the bars.

Before we got too far Kyle had a flat rear tire.  His first on the trip.  While we were fixing the tire, our friends in the jeeps showed up!  It just so happened that we were at the GPS coordinates they had for a place to watch the race!  Luckily they showed up as Kyle managed to loose the rimlock nut in the sand.  As good jeepers, they were prepared and had an extra grade 8 nut that fit.  Thanks!  We watched the cars and then trucks and joined the Jeepers camp.

Sauteed beef and vegetables on buns with beer.  Amazing. Shortly after we were given custom Jeep Club Florianopolis Dakar TShirts.  Thanks!  Now we were part of the club!

Enjoying lunch.

The dusty aftermath.  Thanks for the shot Pablo.
